Laptop RAM Upgrade

If you own an old laptop and want to make it run faster then maybe the easiest way  is upgrading its RAM. Read this post to learn how to make an Laptop RAM Upgrade.

Almost every laptop has a removable cover on its underside. Read your laptop’s manual if you can’t locate it. The memory slots are placed under this cover. Remove it and see if there is an empty slot for the new memory. If you don’t have a free slot available, then you will have to remove one or both  of  the existing modules. Before starting the upgrade see your laptop manual to find out what type of RAM is supported.

The most commonly used types of RAMs are listed below.

SDRAM PC 100/133

pin count – 144                                                                                             operating voltage – 3.3v

SDRAM PC 100/133 ; pin count - 144 ; operating voltage - 3.3v————————————————————————————————

DDR RAM

pin count – 200                                                                                                 operating voltage – 2.6v

DDR RAM ; pin count - 200 ; operating voltage - 2.6v————————————————————————————————

DDR 2 RAM

pin coumt – 200                                                                                           operating voltage  – 1.8v

DDR 2 RAM ; pin coumt - 200 ; operating voltage - 1.8v———————————————————————————————–

DDR3 RAM

pin count – 204                                                                                           operating voltage – 1.5v

DDR3 RAM ; pin count - 204 ; operating voltage - 1.5v———————————————————————————————–

The 200-pin SO DIMMs  (DDR and DDR2)  are almost indistinguishable so be careful when you buy such RAMs. The only difference between them is  location of  the notch. If the notch is located further outboard, it indicates the DDR class of memory. When the notch is located nearer the center of the board, it indicates DDR2. These two types of memory are not interchangeable, and the different notch locations prevent incorrect installation.

Lenovo 500s Motherboard replacement

Lenovo 500sLenovo 500s 4

Today i serviced a Lenovo 500s laptop that wasnt turning on or charging. I first test charger using on another computer and it was charging fine. Performed battery reset by removing battery and charger for then pushing and holding power for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. then connected charger only then tried to power on, but still no response. Next checked to be sure that charger was making proper connection to DC Jack and it was tight fit.

At this point laptop needs to be disassembled to test power to main board. (Board will be replaced)

First start by removing charger and battery to prevent shorting or shock.

Next remove 3 screws at bottom that hold back cover on. Lenovo 500s 6Next remove Hard Drive by removing 2 screws, then slide out of dock.Lenovo 500s 7After removing all screws (including the 2  holding the fan) turn laptop over then remove keyboard.  Lenovo 500s 9To remove keyboard, use thin pry tool (at the top) and slowly releasing section of keyboard from left to right and remove ribbon. Lenovo 500s 10Remove all connectors then with pry tool separate palm rest from bottom casing.  Lenovo 500s 11Next remove all connectors once again then screws from board, then remove.
